Three formats, one botanical, very different results in a formulation. Choosing the wrong one is the most common — and most expensive — sourcing mistake in flavour and fragrance procurement.

How each format is produced

The production route determines exactly which molecules end up in your drum.

When each format wins

Match the format to what the finished product actually needs to deliver.

  • Essential oil — aroma-led applications: fragrance, aromatherapy, home care, top-note flavour
  • Oleoresin — taste and pungency-led applications: savoury, seasoning, beverages, nutraceuticals
  • CO₂ extract — where fidelity to the fresh botanical matters and heat damage is unacceptable
  • Isolates — when you need one molecule (e.g. citral) at defined purity and cost

Cost per effect, not cost per kilo

Headline price is misleading across formats. Oleoresins and CO₂ extracts are stronger, so the in-use cost can be lower even at a higher price per kilo.

Practical selection checklist

Run these five questions before you raise a purchase requisition.

  • Does the product need aroma, taste, colour, or a functional actives claim?
  • Is the process aqueous — will you need an emulsified or plated form?
  • Are residual solvents acceptable in your market and category?
  • What is the thermal history downstream of your dosing step?
  • Can you dose accurately at ppm level, or do you need a diluted standard?
